Your Passport Has a Ranking. Your Life Needs a Plan.

What the Henley Passport Index tells you about travel freedom—and the questions it cannot answer about moving abroad.

A passport ranking is an excellent way to start an argument at dinner. Everyone has a favourite country. Someone will confuse visiting with emigrating. By dessert, somebody has announced they are moving to Dubai.

Before anyone sells the sofa, let’s read the small print.

WHAT HENLEY ACTUALLY COUNTS

Henley’s methodology compares 199 passports across 227 destinations. It awards access points under defined short-stay rules, including visa-free entry, qualifying visas on arrival and electronic travel authorities. Government-approved e-visas before departure do not receive the same treatment. This is a measure of travel access, with particular assumptions—not a survey of how happy people are after relocating. [1]

That distinction is the whole story. The number beside a passport is not the number of places where its holder can automatically get a job, establish a business or settle permanently.

What earns a Henley access point?
Entry arrangementIndex treatment
Visa-free entry1 point
Qualifying visa on arrival, without prior approval1 point
Electronic travel authority (ETA)1 point
Government-approved e-visa before departure0 points
Traditional visa required before travel0 points
Methodology summary, checked 16 October 2026. These points describe short-stay access, not permission to live or work. The live ranking could not be verified, so no current passport positions are presented here. Source and full methodology.

THE FREEDOM THAT A LEAGUE TABLE MISSES

Imagine two people choosing where to build a life. One travels constantly for work and needs fewer application hurdles. The other wants to live near an ageing parent, keep earning remotely and find a school that suits their child.

They can look at the same ranking and reasonably care about completely different things. A destination that makes no difference to the first person may be the second person’s entire reason for moving.

Our view: a useful mobility plan begins with the places you actually need to reach. Count your meaningful connections before counting flags.

MAKE A PERSONAL ACCESS MAP

Write down five destinations: where your family lives, where your clients are, where you would like to study, where you might settle and where you would go in an emergency. For each, investigate the appropriate permission for the purpose and length of your stay. Then add the things no passport leaderboard can organise for you: savings, professional credentials, language skills and people you can call when something goes wrong.

The point is not to talk anyone out of wanting more freedom. It is to turn that desire into a practical sequence of decisions.

A stronger passport can be valuable. So can discovering that a suitable route already exists for the passport you hold. Start with your own documents and circumstances, rather than a fantasy nationality.

THE BORDERLESS SELF TAKE

Use Henley to understand one dimension of access. Use your own priorities to decide what to do with it. National pride is welcome at dinner; it is a less reliable project manager.

What would more freedom actually let you do? Name that first. Then build the plan.
