Immigrant Invest’s ranking offers a starting point for remote workers. Your eligibility still needs its own investigation.
The laptop is portable. The income is online. The mood board is mostly Mediterranean. Naturally, the next step is to announce that you are “location independent”.
The immigration forms may have a few follow-up questions.
WHAT THIS INDEX PUTS FIRST
Immigrant Invest’s 2026 Digital Nomad Visa Index places Spain first, followed by Malta, Portugal, Germany and Hungary. Its model gives tax policy and visa duration/residency pathways 20% each; income requirements and quality of life receive 15% each; three other categories receive 10% each. The report says its evidence base runs through 2025. [1]
Our reading: this model rewards more than an attractive temporary base. It gives significant attention to what your stay might become. That is a useful question if you are thinking about a longer chapter abroad.
But a ranking is not the authority deciding your application.
| Published order | Destination | Index score |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Spain | 7.9 |
| 2 | Malta | 7.5 |
| 3 | Portugal | 7.05 |
| 4 | Germany | 7.0 |
| 5 | Hungary | 7.0 |
THE PART WORTH SLOWING DOWN FOR
The report’s own income figures are not fully consistent: Italy appears at €32,400 annually in the summary and €2,500 monthly in its table. Those amounts do not annualise to the same number. We would not turn either into application advice without checking the relevant official requirements. [1]
This is a practical example of why a polished chart should begin research rather than end it. A current-looking cover does not make every cell a current rule.
WHAT KIND OF REMOTE WORKER ARE YOU?
Start with your real arrangement. Are you employed, self-employed or running a company? Who pays you? Where are your clients? Does your employer actually permit you to work from the place you have chosen? What changes if a partner or child joins you?
These are the questions to take into an eligibility check. “I work on the internet” is a description of your day, not a complete description of your circumstances.
Next, define your time horizon. A season abroad and a plan to build a permanent home deserve different shortlists. Ask what happens at renewal, what happens if income changes, and what options exist when the initial permission ends. Get answers for the specific route, rather than assuming every permit in a country behaves alike.
THE BORDERLESS SELF TAKE
Use this ranking to discover options and decide what to investigate. Keep a second document containing official sources, dates checked and unresolved questions. Give the unresolved questions as much attention as the inspirational photographs.
The ambition is good. The preparation should be just as good. A remote career can make a different life imaginable; a properly researched plan is what helps you pursue it.
