The World Is “Open”. Your Passport Would Like a Word.

Borderless Intelligence: The world is open? An open doorway and globe illustrate global mobility.

The World Openness Score tracks global mobility. Your own access may tell a very different story.

“The world is your oyster” is a lovely phrase, usually delivered by someone who has never needed three months of bank statements to go on holiday.

For people planning life across borders, openness deserves a more precise conversation.

A GLOBAL NUMBER, NOT A PERSONAL INVITATION

Passport Index’s World Openness Score is a live indicator of global mobility. The retrieved 2026 table shows 21,770, compared with 22,142 at the end of 2025: a displayed decline of 1.7%. These are index scores, not numbers of countries or percentages of people allowed to travel. Treat the 2026 figure as a dated snapshot, not a completed full-year result. [1]

The publisher’s access definition also matters. Its FAQ includes visa-free access, visas on arrival, electronic travel authorisations and qualifying e-visas issued within three days in Mobility Scores. That helps explain why passport tables from different publishers can disagree. [2]

A comparison is only useful if you know what is being counted. Otherwise, you are arguing over the answer while everyone quietly uses a different question.

OPEN FOR WHOM, AND FOR WHAT?

Our interpretation is that global totals make useful background, but poor personal instructions. A rise somewhere else in the system might leave the journey you need unchanged. Equally, one new connection could make a huge difference to your family even if the global headline barely moves.

Think about the difference between an annual trip to see relatives and a long-term move. The first needs a workable travel plan. The second needs an answer to where you can live, what you can do there and how you will support yourself. The same headline should not be expected to solve both.

TURN THE HEADLINE INTO A CHECKLIST

Before booking, look up the exact destination requirements for your nationality and travel purpose. Include transit points. Check whether an electronic authorisation is needed, what documents must travel with you and what your permission actually covers.

For relocation, open a separate list. Put work rights, family permissions, housing costs and the consequences of staying longer on it. Give each question an owner and a source. “Someone in a Facebook group said it was fine” is a lead to investigate, not a filing system.

THE BORDERLESS SELF TAKE

We should care about whether the world becomes easier to navigate. We should also resist mistaking a global indicator for our own boarding pass.

Ask a better question than “Is the world open?” Ask: “Which doors are open to me, for the life I want—and what do I need to walk through them?”
